In Center of Detention, journalists Lewis Kamb and Carol Smith offer a rare look inside one of the largest detention facilities in the United States, through the story of one family man, like thousands of others, awaiting a decision that will change his life.
Oscar Campos Estrada is, by all accounts, unexceptional. A resident of Washington State with kids who are citizens, one in college, he came to the U.S. from Mexico more than 20 years ago. Some will feel little sympathy. Oscar broke the law when he snuck across the border. He broke it again when he bought a Social Security card, and yet again when he drove drunk and without a license. It is because of his actions that his family is suffering. But through Oscar, Kamb reveals the local immigrant underground that helps a person survive here illegally for decades. And puts a face on the rewards of illegal immigration that compel a person to risk breaking the law to come here.
Alongside Kamb’s story are additional pieces by InvestigateWest executive editor Carol Smith documenting the byzantine legal system detained immigrants face, often without a lawyer or translator, and the makeup of the detention facility population, now 1,500 beds strong. Based on a review of more than 20,000 pages of records and hundreds of interviews with more than 75 people, Center of Detention is an incisive look at the public and deeply personal ramifications of U.S. immigration policy.

“Center of Detention“ raised my awareness of the obstacles many hard working individuals face when being detained for illegal status. Most of these people are hard working, tax paying community contributing individuals who just want a chance to raise their families in an environment of opportunity. It is a shame that a country founded on the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness would bestow such horrible conditions on others trying to do the same.Product details

Center of Detention edition by Carol Smith Lewis Kamb Kim Bradford Politics Social Sciences eBooks Reviews
Must read for those who follow the U.S. justice system and our current controversies on immigration policy. I'd thought I was at least somewhat informed on this topic, but reading this book has made me realize that the issue is much more complicated that we are led to believe from general news reports. "Center of Detention" really opened my eyes to some of the fundamental flaws in our justice system and how much the general public is kept in the dark. The authors, both investigative reporters, use real stories portraying how individuals, families and larger communities are affected by the current system. Overall, this is a highly readable book, a fantastic piece of research, and important information for anyone interested in U.S. immigration reform.
This should be read by everyone. ESPECIALLY those involved with reforming our immigration laws.
Out standing must read for everyone.
